You may have noticed that the conference starts on the 18th, but I'm going to be in Vegas by the 17th. I'll be attending two pre-conference workshops on the 17th. Look for reports on those workshops as well as the conference itself.
Classroom of the Future
John Makevich, Director of Strategic Planning and Operations,
California Community College Online Education Initiative
Several disruptions are converging in higher
education: budgets are tighter, tuition is higher, and financial aid debt is
spiraling out of control. Massively open online courses (MOOCs) have made
ripples on the surface of teaching and learning while slick vehicles for
learning, such as the Khan Academy, continue to amaze in their ability to reach
the millions. John Makevich will challenge the assumptions of education as we
know it. What new types of content will influence today's online courses? What
factors should we consider as we plan for the growth, or contraction of,
existing online programs? What resources will we need? Participants will have
the opportunity to "tear the walls down" and re-envision the way
students will be learning in five, ten, and 20 years. You will likely be quite
surprised at how much we can see education evolve.
Open Educational
Resources: Roadmap to Adoption
James Glapa-Grossklag, Dean, Educational Technology, Learning Resources,
and Distance Learning, College of the Canyons; Una Daly,
Outreach Manager, Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources
(CCCOER); and, Dr. Donna Gaudet, Department Chair,
Mathematics, Vice President, CCCOER
Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching
and learning materials that are openly licensed permitting their use and
re-use. OERs can reduce costs for students and give faculty more control over
instructional materials. This sounds promising but what do college leaders need
to know before promoting campus-wide OER adoption? How do you engage and gain
buy-in from multiple stakeholders for the multi-year journey to sustainability
of an OER initiative?
Join this workshop from the Community College
Consortium for Open Educational Resources (CCCOER) to understand how to
articulate the benefits and challenges of using OER. Learn from case studies of
colleges that have successfully taken OER adoption to scale. Use our template
derived from the experiences of many community colleges engaged in OER to
develop an adoption roadmap for your own department or college.
